Why being in Australia matters for sponsorship

Here is the single most important pattern in Australia's aged care sponsorship data: employers sponsor people they know. Of the primary visas granted under Aged Care Industry Labour Agreement arrangements up to August 2025, roughly nine in ten went to applicants who were already in Australia — working, training, or on placement — when their employer nominated them.

Why employers sponsor onshore

Sponsoring a worker is a serious commitment for an aged care provider. Before nominating someone, an employer wants to know three things: can this person do the job to Australian standards, will they fit the team, and will they stay? A résumé from overseas can't answer those questions. Three to four weeks of supervised shifts can.

How the OJT model answers it

The OJT Australia program is built around that reality. By the time a candidate finishes their placement, a potential sponsor has seen them:

• Complete 120 hours of supervised, unpaid On-the-Job Training in a real aged care or disability workplace;
• Hold the qualifications employers require — (CHC33021) Certificate III in Individual Support and (HLTAID011) Provide First Aid, issued by ACM College (RTO 45239);
• Operate the actual equipment — hoists, slings, manual handling — trained face-to-face in Sydney before the placement begins;
• Work in a regional location, where employers are most likely to sponsor because qualified staff are hardest to find.

The honest fine print

No program can guarantee sponsorship — the decision always belongs to the employer, and visa decisions to the Department of Home Affairs. What a well-designed pathway can do is stack every controllable factor in your favour: the right qualification, Australian workplace experience, physical presence, and an employer who has watched you work. That's the model.
